Al began climbing at age 58 in 1988. Over a ten year period, from 1990 to 2000, Al, along with close friends and trusted associates, embarked on twenty climbing expeditions, including the Seven Highest Peaks on the Seven Continents. He made four attempts to summit Everest (1993, 1995, 2000, and 2002). In 1993, he climbed Mount Everest to 22,000'. By 2000, he had reached 28,710'. He missed reaching the Everest summit in 2000 by 310'. During this year, he was considered the oldest person ever to reach this elevation on Everest.
